As you all may or may not know, this friday (according to facebook.com) is Nick Burnham's birthday. I figured, this being the first year we're away at college and whatnot, it would be a good time to stop and reflect on our last three years of friendship.
For those of you a bit foggy on the details, Nick and I met a long time ago (around 6th grade, we were on the same baseball team), but it wasn't till freshman german where we actually hung out. That time was spent with me heckling Nick, Rebecca, and Justin. Nick was a good sport about it (more than could be said about rebecca ha ha) and I'm like...ya know, that Nick kid is pretty cool- and we started to hang about the school abit-
But it was our sophomore year when everything came together- we had the good fortune of taking another German class together, and that's when we started hangin out, cruisin in the Camry lookin for trouble and parties. We hung out at my place playing xbox, went to youth group frequently, played magic the gathering, and were more or less as nerdy as possible. We started hanging out in Colin's garage, and then his basement. Sophomore year had its share of memories- like playing Ben's trombone at the Doehrmann house as loud as possible, playing magic in the mall parking lot, playing mafia at youth group, and cruising in the camry listening to the bloodhound gang and NOFX as loud as possible (it wasn't till later that I found out that me playing the same four songs by them over and over again actually bugged nick lol) and who can forget that terrible youth group trip to adventure land (where I actually hardly hung out with him, and ended up chilling witha bunch of women instead- sorry about that dude!)
Aw yes...that was the story it seems- our friendship seemed constantly at odds with the fact that women were constantly biding for our attention...now this might not seem like such a bad thing, but it eventually led to what I refer to as "The Dark Times" in our friendship, we we hung out maybe once a month, hardly spoke, stopped going to parties together, and never saw each other during that summer between our junior and senior year.
During this time, there was a Jihad, I whored myself out to just about every girl in Williamsburg, the Tribe fell apart and we both ended up dating our respective "uber-bitches". We were all under alot of stress then, and I especially did some stupid things during that time. So I'd like to take this moment in this tribute to say to Nick that I'm sorry about the Jihad and all it's shittiness, as funny as it may have been at the time for me or anyone else. Considering who I've dated since then, I have no room to talk about making shitty girlfriend choices. So I'm sorry man.
This all went on till the end of our senior year, and though things got marginally better that summer afterwards, it wasn't until the famed weekend of redemption the amazingness that was our friendship was renewed. That weekend, the powers that be saw fit to restore to us Nick Burnham, and since then, life has been peachy.
So Nick, thanks for being such a kick ass friend. Thanks for putting up with all my terrible trends, from the anarchist I was to the apathetic fellow I am now. Thanks for still deciding to assosciate with me despite the jihad, thanks for not judging me for my terrible life choices despite the fact that I have often been overjudgemental of you. Thanks for being a friend who I can play xbox with, watch all 6 episodes of star wars with, nearly get arrested with (good times ha ha...) and just chill with yo. I know we're pretty much polar opposites as far as personalities and tastes go, while I'd prefer a punk rock concert in a bar you'd probably prefer a classical concert in a concert hall, but despite our differences and all the dark times we've had, we're still here, and still friends. I don't know about you, but I'd say that's a pretty damn good deal.
So Happy Birthday you silly bastard- make it count!
